Abstinence is better? Who’d have thought?

As the aphorism goes, men use “love” to get sex and women use sex to get love.

Given this cultural attitude, I’m not surprised at the study I read about yesterday demonstrating that teen sex is a predictor of depression.

teen.jpgAccording to the article (by Janice Shaw Crouse, commentator for Concerned Women for America), researchers have known for a long time about the correlation between depression and risky behavior in teens. Common theories held that depressed teens turned to drugs and sex to cope with their depression.

A new study by five researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, however, has “found conclusively that sex and drug behavior predicted an increased likelihood of depression, but depression did not predict behavior.” Unsurprisingly, girls are far more negatively affected than boys.

Significantly, only 4% of teens not engaging in sex or drug use were at risk for depression.

Says Crouse:

We cannot afford to continue perpetuating the myth that “sex is no big deal.” It is a big deal; it always has been and always will be. Even if contraception and the prevention of disease transmission were 100 percent effective, which they most certainly are not, the psychological impact of meaningless, casual sexual intimacy — particularly upon young females — can never be erased. No amount of argument to the contrary will change that basic biological reality.
